The complete breakdown

Claude has 3 modes.
Most people only use one.

Chat, Cowork, and Code all run the same AI brain โ€” but they're built for completely different types of work. Using the wrong one means leaving most of Claude's power on the table.

Claude Chat
The one everyone knows. Use it for thinking.
The classic Claude you know from claude.ai. You type, it responds. Back and forth conversation with built-in web search, file uploads, and memory. Think of it like texting a really smart friend who knows everything โ€” great for quick answers, brainstorming, and drafting.
Best for
Real use cases
"Write me 5 hooks for my TikTok video about AI receptionists" Chat
Quick creative task, back and forth until you find the right one. No files needed.
"Help me reply to this client email" Chat
Paste the email, get a draft reply, refine it in conversation. Done in 2 minutes.
"What's the best pricing strategy for AI services in 2026?" Chat
Research question with web search. Claude pulls current data and gives you a real answer.
"Audit my Instagram bio and tell me what to fix" Chat
Paste your bio, get specific feedback, iterate in conversation. No setup needed.
Not great for
Tasks that require accessing files on your computer, running long multi-step workflows, writing and running code, or anything that needs to keep working in the background. For those โ€” use Cowork or Code.
๐Ÿค
Claude Cowork
The autonomous agent. Use it for doing.
Cowork is where Claude stops answering and starts doing. You point it at a folder on your computer, describe what you want done, and it executes the whole thing โ€” reading files, making decisions, creating documents, connecting to apps. You don't babysit it. It hands you back the finished result.
Best for
Real use cases
"Go through my downloads folder and organize everything by category" Cowork
Cowork reads the folder, figures out categories, renames and moves files. You come back to a clean folder.
"Read all 50 of these client meeting notes and write a summary report" Cowork
Point it at the folder. It reads every file, finds patterns, writes the report. Would take you hours manually.
"Check my Gmail for any unanswered leads from the last 7 days and draft replies" Cowork
Cowork connects to Gmail via MCP, finds the emails, drafts replies for your review. One prompt, done.
"Schedule this week's content across Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn at my best times" Cowork
Connects to Metricool, reads your analytics, schedules everything at optimal times automatically.
Not great for
Quick back-and-forth questions (use Chat for those) or anything that involves writing, running, and debugging actual code across a codebase (use Code for that). Cowork is for knowledge work and file tasks โ€” not software development.
โš™๏ธ
Claude Code
The developer agent. Use it for building.
Claude Code lives in your terminal. It reads your entire codebase, writes code, runs tests, fixes bugs, and deploys โ€” all by itself. It scored 93.9% on SWE-bench, the industry standard coding benchmark. This is the one that replaces a developer. You don't need to know how to code to use it โ€” just describe what you want built.
Best for
Real use cases
"Build me a landing page for my AI receptionist business" Code
Describe what you want. Claude Code builds the entire page, opens it in your browser, waits for feedback.
"Build me a client CRM that runs in my browser โ€” no backend" Code
One prompt. Claude Code writes all the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Fully working tool in under 5 minutes.
"Install the marketing skills from Corey Haines and connect n8n via MCP" Code
Claude Code runs the install commands, handles the configuration, confirms everything is connected.
"Build me an animated TikTok video using Remotion โ€” black background, my name animating in" Code
Claude Code uses the Remotion skill to build the video, runs the studio, lets you preview and revise.
Not great for
Quick conversational tasks (use Chat) or file organization and knowledge work tasks (use Cowork). Claude Code is overkill for anything that doesn't involve actually building or running something technical. That said โ€” it's the most powerful of the three.
